What Exactly Happened to Yo Yo Honey Singh?

In recent years, discussions about mental health have gained greater importance. This is partly due to celebrities like Deepika Padukone, Virat Kohli, and Yo Yo Honey Singh aka Hirdesh Singh Bollywood-Punjabi Rapper sharing their struggles.

Honey Singh, a famous Indian musician, has openly talked about his battle with bipolar disorder, sparking conversations on this complex issue.

His journey shows the suffering caused by mental illness. It also urges us to speak out and raise awareness of this critical issue.

Background of Yo Yo Honey Singh

Yo Yo Honey Singh is a popular Indian rapper, music producer, and actor. The Hindi and Punjabi music industries regard him as renowned for his single "Lungi Dance." He is also credited with bringing Indian rap to the world. This rapper has faced many struggles. He calls his public battle with bipolar disorder life-changing.

Honey Singh has transformed his public image throughout his career. An artist, once known for his powerful performances, has had a journey with mental illness. It has added depth to his persona. It lets him share his struggles with many. Being vocal about his condition has made him an icon of resilience and hope for many.

Understanding Bipolar Disorder

Depression, otherwise known as depressive disorder, is a mental illness. Bipolar disorder, or bipolar manic depression, is a mental illness. It causes extreme mood swings. These include high moods, called mania or hypomania, and low moods, called depression.

The National Institute of Mental Health says 2.8 per cent of U.S. adults, about 4.4 million, have bipolar disorder.

Symptom and Prevalence

Psychotic symptoms are even evident, which might lead the patient to have delusions or hallucinations.

Honey Singh claimed that he felt psychotic symptoms, in which "I started feeling godly and that I indeed had some supernatural powers" a typical progression in Manic episodes. In this podcast, Yo Yo shares his substance abuse

“I spent a lot of time alone. I have said that in many interviews. I didn't leave my house for 3.5 years. And I didn't leave my room for 1.5 years. Even when I took a bath, I used a bath with the door open. I had so much fear inside me. Bipolar disorder with psychotic symptoms was the problem faced by me. This tends to happen because of dry dope and drinking liquor mostly, with sleeping less and the wrong lifestyle. Dry dope means, weed? Yeah, I used to do a lot. Was introduced in 2012. I did it a lot for 2 years. Did it in an extreme way. My entire career, everything collapsed due to that. The rest saw a lot of things in that darkness. I saw God, I saw Satan.”

What are Psychotic Symptoms?

Psychotic symptoms are a group of mental health symptoms that impact a person's thought processes, perceptions, and behaviours in a way that causes them to be out of touch with reality.

They can be quite serious and unsettling and significantly interfere with one's functional ability in everyday life. These most commonly include:

  1. Delusions: Firmly held, false beliefs not based on reality. Common delusions are beliefs of persecution, including people plotting against them, grandeur, special powers or importance, and bizarre ideas, such as being controlled by external forces.
  2. Hallucinations: The perception of things that do not exist. These may include seeing, hearing, or feeling something, or even smelling it that others don't. The most common type is auditory hallucinations, that is, hearing voices.
  3. Disorganised Thinking: Difficulty in organizing one's thoughts, which may lead to incoherent and illogical speech. This might include wandering from subject to subject, with no obvious connection, thus making it hard for listeners to follow what the person is talking about.
  4. Disorganized or Abnormal Motor Behavior: The severity may range from childlike silliness to unpredictable agitation. There may be a significant lessening in their daily activity performance, resistance to instructions, holding of odd postures, or lacking movement.
  5. Negative Symptoms: These are a lessening or absence of normal functions. This can consist of flat affect, which is a lack of emotion, loss of interest in activities, loss of motivation, or difficulties in initiating or maintaining conversation.

Psychotic symptoms can occur with many mental health disorders, most commonly schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, but also with severe depression and some neurological conditions.

They can also be induced by substance misuse, some medications, and medical conditions that affect the brain. Treatments include a combination of antipsychotic medications, mental health therapies, and support in the management of symptoms and improvement in the quality of life for the affected person.

Causes of Bipolar Disorder

The cause remains a mystery. It may be a mix of genetic, biological, and environmental factors. Stress, substance abuse, and trauma can trigger episodes in those who are prone to this disorder.

Let’s understand the mix of genetic, biological and environmental factors in brief.

Genetic Factors

  • Family History: Bipolar disorder tends to run in families. If one of the family members, either a parent or sibling has bipolar disorder, the risk increases for the rest as well.
  • Genetic Mutations: Specific genetic variations may contribute to the development of bipolar disorder, but there is no single gene responsible for the disorder.

Biological Factors

  • Abnormalities of Brain Structure and Function: Evidence suggests that abnormalities in brain structure and function specifically in areas linked to mood regulation are associated with bipolar disorder. Changes in neurotransmitter levels, like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, are also found in the disorder.
  • Hormonal Imbalances: Hormonal changes may impact the precipitation or aggravation of bipolar symptoms, particularly those related to hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis functioning.

Environmental Factors

  • Traumatic Life Events: Traumatic events, chronic stress, or major life transitions, such as the death of a loved one, financial difficulties, or relationship issues, can trigger an episode or worsen bipolar disorder.
  • Substance Abuse: Drug and alcohol use can trigger or exacerbate bipolar symptoms. Substance abuse is also quite prevalent among people with bipolar disorder, hence it presents challenges in diagnosis and subsequent treatment.
  • Lack of Sleep: Disturbed sleep or irregular patterns of sleep can trigger a manic or depressive episode in bipolar disorder patients.

Other Contributing Factors

  • Childhood Trauma: Events like physical, emotional, or sexual abuse during childhood can increase the vulnerability to bipolar disorder.
  • Personality Traits: Personality traits such as high sensitivity, impulsiveness, and extreme emotionality may also be contributing factors to the disease.
